Nestled in the foothills of Mt. Hood National Forest, just steps from the rushing Sandy River and framed by the towering Cascade Mountains, Midnight Hollow Cabin is a retreat that blends the raw beauty of the Pacific Northwest with a refined sense of design.

For owners Carly and Kevin, this place is more than just a scenic getaway. It’s deeply personal — rooted in childhood memories of exploring the region with Carly’s father, carrying forward a legacy of adventure and appreciation for nature. With Midnight Hollow, Carly and Kevin have created a space that honors the rhythms of the land, inviting guests to slow down, reconnect and experience the magic of the forest, mountains and river.

From its vaulted ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows to the Nordic hot tub under the stars, every detail in the cabin was designed to capture the essence of the Pacific Northwest. Here, nature and design exist in harmony, offering an unforgettable retreat for those seeking both serenity and inspiration.

Why did you choose this location in the foothills of Mt. Hood National Forest, with its proximity to the Sandy River and Cascade Mountains?

Rhododendron, a small village at Mt Hood, Oregon truly embodies a paradise-like quality. Imagine picture-perfect mountain streams winding through lush old-growth forests, framed by towering Cascade peaks. This location offers a zen-like balance, where snowy glaciers are just a 20-minute drive away, and the vibrant city of Portland is less than an hour’s journey. It’s a year-round destination with something for everyone: foraging, hiking, climbing, fishing and skiing — all right at your fingertips.

For Carly and Kevin, Rhododendron is also deeply sentimental. Carly grew up exploring the area with her father, carrying on a tradition passed down from his own childhood. Owning a cabin here became the fulfillment of a family dream, creating a place where generations can gather and make memories.

How does the natural environment — the river, forest and mountains — shape the overall experience of Midnight Hollow?

The natural environment is not just a backdrop — it’s a central character in the Midnight Hollow experience. The cabin is nestled in a hollow surrounded by ancient trees, a gentle stream and the roaring Sandy River just beyond. Guests wake up to the sound of rushing water and views of Huckleberry Mountain.

We designed Midnight Hollow to bring the outdoors in. Whether you’re soaking in the Nordic hot tub under the stars, enjoying a movie in the home theater or relaxing in the infrared sauna, nature is always present, shaping every moment.

When was Midnight Hollow Cabin originally built?

Midnight Hollow Cabin was built in 2023, but the journey started in 2021 when we purchased the land. We worked closely with an architect to design a custom cabin that feels as though it belongs to the surrounding old-growth forest, naturally cradled in a hollow.

What were your core priorities in terms of functionality and aesthetics?

Our core priorities were to create a seamless relationship between form and function. Every aesthetic decision served a purpose: large windows frame the forest like artwork, vaulted ceilings create a sense of openness and modern amenities like the hot tub, infrared sauna and theater ensure guests can relax in comfort. We wanted the cabin to feel contemporary yet timeless — a space where design and nature coexist.

What was the primary vision for the cabin’s interior design? How did you balance modern comforts with a rustic, Pacific Northwest vibe?

Our vision was to create a modern forest sanctuary. We wanted the cabin to feel immersive — like stepping into a part of the landscape itself. The high vaulted ceiling and massive windows connect the interior to the towering trees outside, while materials like wood and stone echo the natural surroundings.

To balance this, we added mid-century modern elements for warmth and style, giving the space a unique personality. Portraits of Lewis and Clark hang as a nod to the region’s history, blending old and new in a way that feels distinctly Pacific Northwest.

Can you share how the color palette and materials were chosen to reflect the natural surroundings?

We prioritized a calming energy inside the cabin to complement the serenity of the outdoors. Neutral tones serve as a foundation, ensuring the views remain the focal point. Pops of color — like green accents — tie the interior to the forest, while natural wood finishes and stone textures add depth and warmth.

The cabin has a mix of airy spaces and cozy corners. How did you approach creating this balance?

We designed the cabin to offer the best of both worlds. The open-concept living area, with its vaulted ceilings and wall of windows, creates a sense of expansiveness, perfect for gathering and entertaining. At the same time, we carved out intimate spaces — like the reading nook and bedrooms with forest views — so guests can find solitude when needed.

The kitchen plays a significant role in the cabin. What was your vision for its design and functionality?

The kitchen was designed as the heart of the cabin — a space for gathering and creating. With its clean lines, premium appliances and natural finishes, it’s both functional and beautiful. The open layout allows for easy flow between cooking, dining and lounging, making it ideal for entertaining.

Were there specific inspirations behind the choice of appliances, finishes or fixtures in the kitchen?

We opted for warmer finishes, natural wood tones and calming colors like green and white, creating a modern yet inviting aesthetic.

What’s a standout detail or feature in the cabin that you think best captures its spirit?

The wall of windows in the living area perfectly encapsulates the spirit of Midnight Hollow. It blurs the line between indoors and outdoors, creating a constant connection to the surrounding forest. Whether it’s a sunrise, a rainy afternoon or a starry night, the views are always magical.

How does the cabin’s design encourage guests to connect with the natural environment outside?

Every aspect of the design invites guests to slow down and appreciate the beauty around them. The back deck overlooks the stream, providing a serene spot for morning coffee or evening stargazing. The Nordic hot tub and infrared sauna enhance the sensory experience, letting guests soak in the sounds and scents of the forest while relaxing.

What elements of the cabin are most loved by guests, whether it’s the layout, decor or overall ambiance?

Guests rave about the blend of luxury and nature. The theater room is a standout for families and movie buffs, while the impressive recessed hot tub is a guest favorite.

Were sustainability or eco-conscious practices part of your remodel? If so, can you share specific features or approaches?

Sustainability was a key focus. We used energy-efficient appliances, LED lighting, natural cleaning products and reclaimed materials wherever possible. The cabin’s design also maximizes natural light, reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day.

How does the cabin reflect your vision of a retreat for both nature lovers and interior enthusiasts?

Midnight Hollow Cabin is a retreat that bridges the gap between natural beauty and modern design. It’s a place where you can feel completely at home in the wilderness without sacrificing style or comfort. Whether you’re here to hike, relax or simply reconnect with yourself, the cabin offers a truly transformative experience.
